Unfortunately, a swimming pool is one of the best places to spread diseases, especially those of the upper respiratory tract.  Bacteria can form almost overnight.  This is just another reason we test your chemistry weekly.  Chlorine is the best algaecide known to man, and that is why good chlorine levels are important.  A good chlorine level keeps bacteria from forming in your pool water, keeping it germ-free.  Chlorine destroys microorganisms and it carries out an additional function as well.  It is an oxidizer.  This oxidation is the "burning up" of organic contaminants introduced to the water by bathers (e.g. hair spray, deodorant, suntan lotion, body oils, persperation, etc and the environment (e.g. pollen and dirt).
